Ready to Paint? Best 6 Things to do to Prepare for Your Upcoming Painting Estimate!

March 18, 2026 by Koop Painting

Getting a professional painting estimate for your project is an exciting step toward refreshing your home. However, to receive the most accurate quote and ensure we understand your vision, a little preparation goes a long way.

This guide will walk you through the decisions you need to make before our estimator arrives. By thinking through these details, you help us tailor the proposal precisely to your needs, bringing you one step closer to the beautiful finish you desire.

1. What Exactly Needs Painting? What to look for before your painting estimate

always inspect your house before your painting estimate to point out problem areas ahead of time

The first decision is the most obvious, but it requires specificity. Vague descriptions lead to vague estimates. Walk around your home—inside and out—and make a definitive “hit list.”

  • Interior Project: Are we painting just the walls? Don’t forget the ceilings, baseboards, window trim, cabinets, door frames, and the doors themselves. Are we painting inside closets or cabinets?
  • Exterior Project: Is it just the siding? What about the eaves, soffits, fascia, trim, porch ceilings, railings, and decks?

2. Choosing Your Colors (And Where to Get Help)

picking your colors for your painting estimate

You do not need to have your final color selections made before the estimate, but having a general idea is helpful. It allows us to discuss whether your chosen colors might require special primers or extra coats for coverage (e.g., transitioning from dark to light).

We know choosing colors can be daunting. We highly recommend utilizing these fantastic external tools to help you visualize possibilities before we meet:

  • Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap® Visualizer: Upload a photo of your own home and virtually “paint” it with any Sherwin-Williams color.
  • Houzz: Search millions of home photos filtered by style and room type to see what color combinations are trending.
  • Pinterest: Create a mood board by searching “exterior paint combinations” or “modern living room colors.”

3. Demystifying Paint Products: The Sherwin-Williams Lineup

At Koop Painting, we proudly use Sherwin-Williams products because of their proven durability and stunning finish. However, Sherwin-Williams offers several product lines, each tailored to different needs and budgets.

During the estimate, we can discuss which is right for your project, but here is a brief breakdown of popular homeowner choices:

Interior Paint Lines

  • Emerald® Interior: The top-tier choice. It offers exceptional washability, coverage, and resistance to water streaking or spotting. It includes anti-microbial agents to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the paint surface.
  • Duration Home®: An excellent premium choice, known for its moisture resistance (great for bathrooms and kitchens) and durability against scuffs. It’s a paint and primer in one.
  • SuperPaint® Interior: A reliable, high-performing standard. It offers good hide, a smooth finish, and is durable enough for most living areas.
  • Emerald® Urethane Trim Enamel: Give cabinets, doors and trim a smooth, luxurious finish with Emerald® Urethane Trim Enamel. This water-based enamel paint resists yellowing compared to traditional oil based coatings and creates a hard durable finish that withstands the wear and tear of frequently cleaned and used areas.
  • Gallery Series™ Waterborne Topcoat: This premium waterborne coating is ideal for use on kitchen cabinets, wood and composite building products achieving two-component performance with a one-component system. With superior moisture and chemical resistance as well as excellent blocking resistance, this self-sealing finish meets or exceeds Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) requirements.

Exterior Paint Lines

  • Emerald Rain Refresh: Emerald Rain Refresh Exterior is an ultra-durable exterior coating with Self-Cleaning Technology™. Rain Refresh is formulated so dirt washes away upon contact with rain or water for a clean, fresh look with minimal maintenance. This new coating offers excellent UV and weather protection
  • Emerald® Exterior: Offers premium self-priming performance and exceptional resistance to blistering, peeling, fading, and dirt pickup.
  • Duration® Exterior: Formulated with PermaLast® technology for long-lasting durability. It is self-priming and requires just one coat over previously painted surfaces in good condition.
  • SuperPaint® Exterior Acrylic Latex:Count on SuperPaint® Exterior Acrylic Latex to deliver outstanding performance and protect against the elements. Cold and frosty or hot and humid, this formula goes on smooth and resists fading and peeling. And thanks to its advanced acrylic resin technology, you’ll enjoy outstanding adhesion and color retention. SuperPaint offers a dirt-resistant and mildew-resistant coating.

4. Selecting the Right Paint Sheen

Sheen refers to how shiny the paint is when dry. It’s not just an aesthetic choice; it also affects durability and how easy the surface is to clean. You don’t need to decide on the sheen prior to the painting estimate, but it is good to have an idea of what you would like.

  • Flat/Matte: No shine. Excellent at hiding imperfections on walls. Best for adult bedrooms, dining rooms, and ceilings.
  • Eggshell/Satin: Low shine. A versatile choice that offers some washability. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, kids’ rooms, and living rooms. Satin is often the preferred choice for exterior siding and trim.
  • Semi-Gloss: Noticeable shine. Very durable and easy to clean. Best for kitchens, bathrooms, trim, baseboards, and doors.
  • High Gloss: Extremely shiny. Toughest finish. Used rarely, but can make a dramatic statement on front doors or specialized architectural features.

You can learn more details in Sherwin-Williams’ Official Sheen Guide.

5. Addressing the Overlooked: Should These Be Included?

When homeowners plan a paint job, they often focus on the siding and walls. To ensure your home looks professional and polished, decide if you want these frequently overlooked areas included in your painting estimate:

  • Gutters & Downspouts: If your gutters are functional but faded or clash with your new color scheme, painting them can help them “disappear” into the trim or siding. If they are leaking or sagging, replacement is necessary before painting.
  • Garage Doors: A fresh coat of paint on a prominent garage door can significantly boost curb appeal. We need to know if you want it to match the trim or the siding.
  • Front Door: Your front door is your home’s handshake. You might want to accent it with a unique color or a higher sheen to make it stand out.
  • Vinyl Windows: While possible to paint vinyl, it requires specialized bonding primers and specifically formulated paints (like Sherwin-Williams’ VinylSafe® colors) to prevent the vinyl from warping when exposed to heat. Let us know if this is on your list so we can quote the correct process.

6. Siding and Wood Replacement Decisions

Painting over rotted or damaged wood is a temporary fix that will inevitably fail, often within months. For a lasting paint job, the underlying structure must be sound.

Before the painting estimate, walk the exterior of your house and inspect the bottom of door frames, window sills, the fascia boards behind gutters, and the bottom rows of siding. Look for soft spots, cracking, or splitting.

Deciding What to Replace

If we find damaged wood, you have two main options to decide upon:

  • Spot Replacement: We replace only the compromised boards or sections. This is cost-effective if the damage is localized.
  • Full Replacement/Upgrade: If the damage is widespread, it may be time to replace all the siding or trim. You might choose to replace old wood with more durable, low-maintenance materials like engineered wood (e.g., LP SmartSide) or fiber cement (e.g., James Hardie).

Having an idea of your preference—whether you want us to handle minor carpentry repairs or if you are considering a full siding overhaul with another company—helps us structure the painting estimate correctly.
